About Us

The Nottingham Astronomical Society are a friendly group of amateur astronomers from all walks of life. Whilst providing regular guest speaker events, we encourage active observing. The Society owns and operates an observatory near Cotgrave.

We are very active in public outreach, partnering with regional organisations, educational establishments and the BBC. We support several specialist interest groups, including astrophotography, radio astronomy and dark skies campaigning; we also maintain close ties with other astronomical societies and university research departments.

Since 1980, we have been twinned with the Karlsruhe Astronomical Society (Astronomischen Vereinigung Karlsruhe, AOD), based in Germany.

Our main meetings are held on the FIRST Thursday of each month (except August) with the meeting starting at 8.00pm. Our Social and Practical Astronomy meeting are held on the THIRD Thursday of each month with the meeting starting at 8.00pm.
